Dr Daniel Birchall MA MB BChir (Cantab) MRCP (London) FRCR MD MBA

I qualified in Medicine from Jesus College Cambridge in 1988. I trained at several centres in the UK, culminating in my Neuroradiology Fellowship at Perth, Western Australia, then the leading Neuroradiology centre in the Southern Hemisphere.

I was appointed a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1992, qualifying with MRCP, and as a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists in 1997. I was awarded the higher degree of MD following a five-year study into the MR imaging of spinal curvature. I was also awarded with an MBA from the Newcastle University Business School, graduating with Distinction in 2010.

I was appointed as Royal College of Radiologists du Boulay Professor of Neuroradiology and have taught in Neuroscience Centres around the UK.

I was President of the British Society of Neuroradiology from 2020 to 2022, overseeing the implementation of an internationally renowned education and case sharing programme. I was elected to the position of President-Elect of the World Federation of Neuroradiological Societies in 2022.

As a Consultant in Newcastle, I specialise in the imaging of the head and spine. I have worked in both Diagnostic and in Interventional Neuroradiology, and my practice includes Adult and Paediatric Neuroradiology. The Regional Neurosciences Centre in Newcastle is internationally renowned as a Centre of Excellence, and I have been Head of Service for a number of years. I have also held senior roles within the Trust, including Chair of the Information Systems Strategy Board. I have maintained a strong academic profile and am the author of over 100 academic papers and publications.

I have been a sitting member of the Board of the British Society of Neuroradiologists (BSNR) and a member of the BSNR Standards Committee. I currently represent the BSNR on the Neuroradiology Academic Committee. In 2017 I was appointed as the Royal College of Radiologists and BSNR du Boulay Professor of Neuroradiology, a role representing the Society and the College in a series of lectures to training centres nationally. I have also acted as a senior editor of the British Journal of Radiology for several years.

Medico-legal
experience

I have developed considerable experience in the medico-legal aspects of Neuroradiology, informed by my experience and expertise as a practising Clinical Neuroradiologist. Over the last 10 years, I have provided several hundred medico-legal reports.

I understand the need for responsiveness and rapid turnaround, and aim to maintain excellent communications with instructing solicitors. I also lecture regularly to medical and legal audiences on medico-legal topics. I am a member of the North East Medicolegal Society.
